ABSTRACT Besides rubber production, one of the main goals of the genetic improvement of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] is to develop vigorous clones. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the vigor of 34 elite juvenile rubber clones. To this end, three experiments were conducted in the municipality of Pontes Gestal, in the northwest region of the São Paulo State. Each experiment consisted of 10 treatments, and 2 controls in common to the 3 experiments. The experiments were arranged in the randomized block design, with three replications and ten plants per plot, in the 8 m x 2.5 m spacing. Individual and joint analyses of variance were performed. The means were compared using the Dunnett test at 5%. Significant effect of treatments was found in the three experiments and in the joint analysis. The most vigorous clones were not different from the controls in the comparison of means by the individual and joint analyses. The less vigorous clones were statistically different from the others and from the controls, reflecting this difference in the genetic variability observed. The breeding program must consider the lack of difference between the most vigorous clones and the controls when recombining superior clones, since genetic gain depends on variability.

RESUMOSão Paulo é o Estado no qual clones de seringueira (Hevea brasiliensisWilld. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg. têm apresentado maior produtividade de borracha, no Brasil. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a produção de borracha e o vigor de 14 clones de seringueira, implantados na região de Votuporanga, além de averiguar mudanças na tendência da correlação anual, para analisar a possibilidade de uma seleção precoce, com base nos caracteres estudados. Para isso, a produção de borracha, em gramas árvore-1sangria-1, foi avaliada, utilizando-se o sistema de sangria 1/2S d/4 5d/7 11m/y ET 2,5%. O período de avaliação da produção de borracha foi de oito anos. O vigor, também, foi analisado, medindo-se o perímetro do caule por 16 anos. Os clones IRCA 111 e PB 235 tiveram os melhores desempenhos de produção de borracha. Os clones IAC 15 e IAC 44 apresentaram os melhores resultados de vigor. As correlações genéticas e fenotípicas foram significativas e positivas entre todos os anos de produção. Para o vigor, a significância dos coeficientes de correlação genotípica e fenotípica diferiram na pré-sangria e na pós-sangria. Pelos valores de produção de borracha observados, os clones IRCA 111 e PB 235 são considerados favoráveis à recomendação em pequena escala para a região de Votuporanga. Com base nos resultados obtidos, é possível realizar uma seleção precoce para o caráter de produtividade, usando-se os dados obtidos no primeiro ano de avaliação. Por causa das diferenças observadas entre os períodos de pré-sangria e pós-sangria, não é aconselhável realizar uma seleção precoce no período de pré-sangria, visando ao caráter de vigor.

ABSTRACTClones of rubber-tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] have achieved the highest yields of rubber in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the yield and vigor of 14 rubber-tree clones cultivated in the region of Votuporanga and determine changes in the trend of annual correlation to examine the possibility of an early selection based on the studied characters. The yield of rubber was evaluated in the 1/2S d/4 5d/7 11m/y ET 2,5% tapping system, for a period of eight years. Vigor was also examined by measuring the girth for 16 years. The clones IRCA 111 and PB 235 showed the best yield performance. The best results of vigor, was achieves by clones IAC 15 and IAC 44. Genetic and phenotypic correlations were significant and positive for all production years. The significance of the genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients of vigor differed in the pre and post-tapping periods. Considering the rubber production found, the clones IRCA 111 and PB 235 can be recommended for small scale cultivation in the region of Votuporanga. The results showed that is possible to make an early selection for yield character, using the data obtained in the first year of evaluation. Because of the differences found in pre and post-tapping, it is not advisable to make an early selection for vigor in the pre-tapping period.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os parâmetros genéticos e estimar ganhos genéticos em progênies jovens de seringueira. Os experimentos foram realizados durante três anos, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com seis repetições e dez plantas por parcela, em três regiões representativas da heveicultura paulista. Vinte e duas progênies foram avaliadas, dos três aos cinco anos de idade, quanto à produção de borracha e incremento anual do caule. O ganho genético foi estimado com o índice multiefeitos (IME). A seleção pela média das progênies proporcionou maior ganho genético do que a seleção baseada em indivíduos, já que os valores de herdabilidade das médias de progênies foram maiores do que os da herdabilidade individual, para ambas as variáveis, em todos os anos de avaliação. A seleção das três melhores progênies quanto à produção de borracha proporcionou um ganho de seleção de 1,28 g por planta. Os ganhos genéticos estimados pelo IME com dados das primeiras avaliações (dos 3 aos 5 anos) foram altos em geral, para produção de borracha e incremento anual do caule. Os elevados ganhos genéticos obtidos para incremento anual no primeiro ano de avaliação indicam que as progênies podem ser selecionadas no início do programa de melhoramento. O tamanho efetivo da população foi condizente com as três progênies selecionadas e mostrou que elas não são aparentadas e que a variabilidade genética da população está garantida. A seleção precoce, com os ganhos genéticos estimados pelo IME, pode ser feita em progênies de seringueira.

The objective of this work was to assess the genetic parameters and to estimate genetic gains in young rubber tree progenies. The experiments were carried out during three years, in a randomized block design, with six replicates and ten plants per plot, in three representative Hevea crop regions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Twenty-two progenies were evaluated, from three to five years old, for rubber yield and annual girth growth. Genetic gain was estimated with the multi-effect index (MEI). Selection by progenies means provided greater estimated genetic gain than selection based on individuals, since heritability values of progeny means were greater than the ones of individual heritability, for both evaluated variables, in all the assessment years. The selection of the three best progenies for rubber yield provided a selection gain of 1.28 g per plant. The genetic gains estimated with MEI using data from early assessments (from 3 to 5-year-old) were generally high for annual girth growth and rubber yield. The high genetic gains for annual girth growth in the first year of assessment indicate that progenies can be selected at the beginning of the breeding program. Population effective size was consistent with the three progenies selected, showing that they were not related and that the population genetic variability is ensured. Early selection with the genetic gains estimated by MEI can be made on rubber tree progenies.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, durante seis anos, a estabilidade temporal da produção de borracha natural de 25 genótipos superiores de Hevea brasiliensis, utilizando os métodos de Wricke, Eberhart & Russell, Lin & Binns, análise dos efeitos aditivos principais e interação multiplicativa (AMMI) e média harmônica da performance relativa dos valores genéticos (MHPRV). Os genótipos IAC 40 e IAC 300 foram identificados como estáveis e produtivos, pelos métodos de Eberhart & Russell, Lin & Binns, MHPRV e Biplot AMMI. Houve alteração no ordenamento dos demais genótipos mais estáveis identificados a partir dessas análises. Os resultados observados no Biplot AMMI mostraram concordância com os observados no método de Wricke para a identificação de genótipos estáveis, mas menos produtivos. A utilização simultânea de diferentes métodos permite a indicação mais precisa de genótipos estáveis. Análises de estabilidade baseadas em diferentes princípios mostram concordância na indicação de genótipos estáveis.

The objective of this work was to assess, during six years, the temporal stability of natural rubber yield of 25 superior Hevea brasiliensis genotypes, using the Wricke, Eberhart & Russell, Lin & Binns, additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis, and harmonic mean of the relative performance of the genetic values (HMRPGV) methods. The IAC 40 and IAC 300 genotypes were identified as stable and high yielding by the Eberhart & Russell, Lin & Binns, HMRPGV, and AMMI Biplot methods. The ranking of the other more stable genotypes identified by these analyses was altered. The observed results in the AMMI Biplot agreed with those observed in the Wricke method for identifying stable, but lower yielding genotypes. The simultaneous use of different methods allows a more accurate indication of stable genotypes. Stability analyses based on different principles show agreement in indicating stable genotypes.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a divergência e a variabilidade genética entre 22 genótipos superiores de seringueira (Hevea sp.) da série IAC 400. Análises univariadas e multivariadas foram realizadas com oito caracteres quantitativos (descritores), incluindo produtividade. Na análise univariada, os parâmetros estimados foram: variâncias genética e ambiental, coeficientes de variação genética e ambiental, e índice de variação. A distância generalizada de Mahalanobis, o método aglomerativo de Tocher e variáveis canônicas foram utilizados nas análises multivariadas. Nas análises univariadas, verificou-se variabilidade entre os genótipos para todas as variáveis avaliadas. O método de Tocher agrupou os genótipos em 11 grupos de dissimilaridade. As quatro primeiras variáveis canônicas explicaram 87,93% da variação acumulada. A maior variabilidade genética foi encontrada em variáveis relacionadas à produtividade de borracha, que foram as que mais contribuíram para a divergência genética. Os pares de genótipos identificados como mais divergentes são indicados para cruzamentos. Os genótipos avaliados são adequados para o melhoramento genético e podem ser utilizados para continuar o programa de melhoramento da seringueira do IAC.

The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic variability and divergence among 22 superior rubber tree (Hevea sp.) genotypes of the IAC 400 series. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using eight quantitative traits (descriptors), including yield. In the univariate analyses, the estimated parameters were: genetic and environmental variances; genetic and environmental coefficients of variation; and the variation index. The Mahalanobis generalized distance, the Tocher agglomerative method and canonical variables were used for the multivariate analyses. In the univariate analyses, variability was verified among the genotypes for all the variables evaluated. The Tocher method grouped the genotypes into 11 clusters of dissimilarity. The first four canonical variables explained 87.93% of the cumulative variation. The highest genetic variability was found in rubber yield-related traits, which contributed the most to the genetic divergence. The most divergent pairs of genotypes are suggested for crossbreeding. The genotypes evaluated are suitable for breeding and may be used to continue the IAC rubber tree breeding program.

Genetic diversity of 60 Hevea genotypes, consisting of Asiatic, Amazonian, African and IAC clones, and pertaining to the genetic breeding program of the Agronomic Institute (IAC), Brazil, was estimated. Analyses were based on phenotypic multivariate parameters and microsatellites. Five agronomic descriptors were employed in multivariate procedures, such as Standard Euclidian Distance, Tocher clustering and principal component analysis. Genetic variability among the genotypes was estimated with 68 selected polymorphic SSRs, by way of Modified Rogers Genetic Distance and UPGMA clustering. Structure software in a Bayesian approach was used in discriminating among groups. Genetic diversity was estimated through Nei's statistics. The genotypes were clustered into 12 groups according to the Tocher method, while the molecular analysis identified six groups. In the phenotypic and microsatellite analyses, the Amazonian and IAC genotypes were distributed in several groups, whereas the Asiatic were in only a few. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.05 to 0.96. Both high total diversity (H T' = 0.58) and high gene differentiation (Gst' = 0.61) were observed, and indicated high genetic variation among the 60 genotypes, which may be useful for breeding programs. The analyzed agronomic parameters and SSRs markers were effective in assessing genetic diversity among Hevea genotypes, besides proving to be useful for characterizing genetic variability.

Vinte e duas progênies de Hevea de polinização aberta obtidas de diferentes clones fenotipicamente selecionados de uma população de origem asiática Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. Adr. ex Juss.) Muell-Arg. durante três anos foram testadas em cinco locais. As variáveis perímetro do caule, produção de borracha, espessura da casca e a altura de planta foram determinadas em todos locais no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. De acordo com as análises de variância, com exceção a produção de borracha, observou-se a existência de interações significativas entre genótipo x ambiente (p<0.01) e heterogeneidade de regressões entre as progênies. Porém, a análise de estabilidade de regressão identificou a interação de poucas progênies cujos coeficientes de regressão foram significativamente diferentes do valor esperado de um. Regressões lineares do desempenho médio das progênies para cada teste em um índice ambiental (média de todas as progênies em cada local) mostrou a estabilidade e adaptabilidade da grande maioria das progênies de Hevea nos diferentes locais. As poucas progênies que foram superiores e altamente produtivas nos diferentes testes de progênies podem ser utilizadas para maximizar a produtividade de cultivares de seringueira e determinar a melhor utilização do ganho genético dos grupos sob as diferentes condições ambientais de cultivo.

Twenty two open-pollinated Hevea progenies from different parental clones of the Asian origin were tested at five sites in the Northwestern São Paulo State Brazil to investigate the progeny girth growth, rubber yield, bark thickness and plant height. Except for the rubber yield, the analysis of variance indicated highly significant (p<0.01) genotype x environment interaction and heterogeneity of regressions among the progenies. However, the regression stability analysis identified only a few interacting progenies which had regression coefficients significantly different from the expected value of one. The linear regressions of the progeny mean performance at each test on an environmental index (mean of all the progenies in each test) showed the general stability and adaptability of most selected Hevea progenies over the test environments. The few progenies which were responsive and high yielding on different test sites could be used to maximize the rubber cultivars productivity and to obtain the best use of the genetically improved stock under different environmental conditions.

A interação genótipo x ano em culturas perenes como a seringueira Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg. representa o diferencial de resposta dos genótipos às mudanças climáticas anuais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a interação genótipo-ano e determinar genótipos temporalmente estáveis por meio da avaliação de seis anos de produção de borracha. Análises de estabilidade foram realizadas pelo método de Eberhart and Russell para produção de borracha na Estação Experimental de Votuporanga, região Noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Vinte e cinco genótipos foram analisados num delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Os resultados mostraram que o melhor genótipo em um ano nem sempre foi o melhor em outro. Os componentes genéticos foram repartidos em lineares (genótipos dentro do ano) e não lineares (desvios agrupados). Quadrados médios significativos para os componentes lineares foram previsíveis indicando que o desempenho dos genótipos através dos anos em relação ao rendimento de borracha é passível de previsão. Entre os clones estudados o IAC 40 também foi considerado altamente produtivo e vigoroso, com adaptabilidade adequada.

The objective of this study was to assess genotype-year interaction and determine temporal stable genotypes across six years of rubber yield evaluation. Stability analyses were performed by Eberhart and Russell method for rubber yield. Twenty-five genotypes were analyzed in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The best genotype in one year was not same always in the other year. The genotype components were partitioned into linear (genotypes within year) and nonlinear (pooled deviations) components. Significant mean square for linear components was predictable. This indicated that the performance of genotypes across the years for rubber yield could be predicted. Among the analyzed genotypes the IAC 40 also was considered highly productive and vigorous, with suitable adaptation.

O programa de melhoramento de Hevea do Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) completou a avaliação dos clones da série IAC 100, IAC 200 e IAC 300. O desempenho médio em torno de 22 clones de [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg.], desenvolvidos pelo IAC, por um período de 11 anos foi avaliado na região Centro Oeste do estado de São Paulo. Dentre os 22 novos clones, seis são resultantes de hibridação intraespecífica (IAC 400, IAC 404, IAC 405, IAC 406, IAC 410, IAC 412) e o restante, clones primários resultantes de ortetes selecionados dentro de progênies de meios irmãos. O clone RRIM 600, de origem Malaia, foi usado como testemunha. O experimento foi conduzido sob delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Desempenho da produção sob o período de quatro anos, média do perímetro do caule no décimo primeiro ano, incremento médio anual do perímetro antes e durante a sangria, espessura de casca, número de anéis de vasos laticíferos no sétimo ano de casca virgem, análise por termogravimetria da borracha produzida, percentagem de incidência de seca do painel de sangria, danos causados pelo vento e doenças como antracnose do painel e das folhas foram observados. A maioria dos clones foi superior em produção em relação ao clone RRIM 600. O clone IAC 400 registrou a mais alta produção (97,40 g árvore-1 sangria-1) em quatro anos de sangria o qual foi seguido pelo IAC 411 (78,87 g árvore-1 sangria-1) visto que o clone testemunha registrou 50,36 g árvore-1 sangria-1. Todos os clones selecionados tiveram crescimento vigoroso. Incrementos do perímetro do caule estiveram acima da média. Exceto o IAC 423, outros clones apresentaram espessura de casca virgem na abertura do painel (mm) variando de 4.84mm (IAC 401) a 6.38 mm (IAC 416). As borrachas estudadas apresentaram boa estabilidade térmica até cerca de 300ºC e não foram observadas diferenças no comportamento térmico entre as amostras dos clones da série IAC e as do clone RRIM 600.

The Hevea breeding program of Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) has completed clonal evaluation on the following series: IAC 100, IAC 200 and IAC 300. The performance of 22 clones of Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg., evolved at IAC, over a period of eleven years was evaluated in the Western Central part of the São Paulo State, Brazil. Among these 22 new clones, six were intraspecific hybrid clones (IAC 400, IAC 404, IAC 405, IAC 406, IAC 410, IAC 412) and the remaining are primary those resulted from selected ortets within half-sib progenies. An old popular clone RRIM 600, of Malaysian origin, was used as the control. The trial was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. Yield performance over a period of four years, mean girth at the 11th year, girth increment before tapping and on tapping, thermal property of natural rubber produced, bark thickness, number of latex vessel rows in seven year virgin bark, percentage incidence of tapping panel dryness, wind damage and diseases like leaf and panel anthracnose have been observed. Sixty one percent of the clones were superior in relation to the control for yield. The clone IAC 400 recorded the highest yield (97.40 g tree-1 tap-1) over four years of tapping, followed by IAC 411 (78.87 tree-1 tap-1), whereas the control clone RRIM 600 recorded 50.86 g tree-1 tap-1. All selected clones were vigorous in growth. Girth increment of these clones was average to above average. Except for IAC 423, other clones had thick virgin bark at opening ranging from 4.84 mm for IAC 401 to 6.38 mm for IAC 416. The natural rubbers from IAC clones have shown good thermal stability up to 300ºC and no differences in the thermal behavior among rubber from clones of the IAC series and the clone RRIM 600 were found in inert atmosphere.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo e os aspectos econômicos de três clones de seringueira [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.], sob nove sistemas de sangria. O experimento foi instalado sob delineamento de blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas no tempo. Os tratamentos principais foram os clones PR 255, RRIM 600 e GT 1, submetidos aos seguintes sistemas de sangria: ½S d/3 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/3 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/4 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/4 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/5 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/5 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/7 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/7 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y e ½S d/2 6d/7.11m/y (testemunha). As variáveis estudadas foram: perímetro do caule, produtividade de borracha seca e secamento do painel. Também foi avaliada a viabilidade econômica dos sistemas de sangria. Observaram-se maior produtividade e rentabilidade dos sistemas ½S d/3.ET 2,5% 8/y para os clones PR 255 e RRIM 600 e ½S d/7.ET 2,5% 8/y para o clone GT 1, comparados com a testemunha. A maior e a menor porcentagem de secamento do painel foram observadas nos sistemas ½S d/3 ET 5,0% 8/y e ½S d/7.ET 5,0% 8/y, respectivamente.

The objective of this work was to evaluate yield performance and economic aspects of three clones of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.], in different tapping systems. The trial was placed under randomized blocks design with split-plot in time. The main treatments were PR 255, RRIM 600 and GT 1 clones submitted to nine systems of tapping: ½S d/3 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/3 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/4 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/4 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/5 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/5 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y; ½S d/7 6d/7.11m/y.ET 2,5% Pa La 8/y ; ½S d/7 6d/7.11m/y.ET 5,0% Pa La 8/y and ½S d/2 6d/7.11m/y (check). The variables were: girth increment, dry rubber productivity and brown bast. The economic viability of the tapping systems was also evaluated. Economical benefits in the ½S d/3.ET 2,5% 8/y system for PR 255 and RRIM 600 clones and in the ½S d/7.ET 2,5% 8/y system for GT 1 clone were observed, compared with the check. Highest and smaller incidence of brown bast were observed in the ½S d/3.ET 5,0% 8/y and ½S d/7.ET 5,0% 8/y systems, respectively.

O desenvolvimento de novos clones de seringueira [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg.] com alto potencial de produção aliado a outros caracteres secundários desejáveis é de fundamental importância para uma heveicultura sustentável e competitiva. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a expressão fenotípica de caracteres superiores em 17 clones de seringueira, tendo em vista a escolha dos mais promissores. Em campo, o experimento obedeceu ao delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições e parcelas lineares de seis plantas. Pelos resultados, verificou-se que o clone IAC 40 foi o mais produtivo, com média de 2.316 kg de borracha seca ha-1 ano-1 no período de seis anos, seguido pelo clone IAC 300 (1.921 kg), enquanto o clone-testemunha, RRIM 600 produziu 1.493 kg. Observou-se na maior parte dos clones, crescimento superior em relação à testemunha. A porcentagem de plantas aptas à sangria variou de 40% (IAC 329) a 100% (IAC 327). Exceto nos clones IAC 56, IAC 331 e IAN 3156 com 7,21 mm, 7,18 mm e 6,40 mm respectivamente, em todos os demais notou-se espessura de casca virgem inferior ao clone RRIM 600 (6,38 mm). Com exceção do IAN 3156, os demais clones tiveram baixa incidência de secamento de painel. O bom desempenho de todos os clones IAC e amazônicos (IAN, Fx e RO) permite que sejam recomendados para plantio em pequena escala, ao tempo em que serão avaliados para futura recomendação em grande escala envolvendo diferentes ambientes do Estado de São Paulo.

The development of new clones with high production combined to other desirable secondary characters is fundamental for a sustainable and competitive rubber tree cultivation. The objective of this study was to evaluate, during a period of 13 years, the phenotypic expression of superior characters of 17 clones of rubber tree grown in the plateau region of São Paulo State, Brazil. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with three replicates and six plants per linear plot. The clone IAC 40 exhibed the highest yield (2.316 kg ha-1 year-1) followed by IAC 300 (1.921 kg), whereas the control clone RRIM 600 had 1.493 kg ha-1 year-1 over six years of tapping. The percentage of plants able for opening ranged from 40% for IAC 329 to 100% for IAC 327. Except for IAC 56, IAC 331 and IAN 3156, with 7.21 mm, 7.18 mm and 6.40 mm respectively, all other clones had lower thick virgin bark at opening compared to the control clone RRIM 600, which recorded 6.38 mm. Except IAN 3.156 all clones showed low incidence of panel dryness. The good performance of all clones, both from IAC and Amazone (IAN, Fx and RO) allow their recommendation for small scale cultivation, when they would be further tested in different environments of the São Paulo State, aiming recommendations in large scale.

In a field trial involving 68 rubber tree (Hevea spp.) clones calculation of genotypic correlation coefficients revealed significant age-age correlation from age 1 to 6 (immature period) for girth A and for age 7 to 12 (mature period) for girth B and for age 7 to 12 (production of latex) for yield. Rank correlation coefficients between all immature ages of girth (girth A), all ages of mature girth (girth B) and all annual rubber production (yield) were significant for the three traits, with the coefficients decreasing with increasing age. Selection of the sets of best 30, 15, 10 and 5 clones from the available 68 clones at a given age was generally accompanied by a descending order of percentage success. It was suggested: (a) to have the best 30 clones of age 6, select the set of best 36 clones at age 2, (b) to have the best 15 clones of age 6, select the set of best 20 clones at age 3, (c) to have the best 5 clones of age 6, select the set of best 8 clones at age 4, and (d) to have the best 3 clones of age 6, select the set of best 3 clones at age 5. More than 80% of the targeted clones on girth A or girth B basis and more than 76.7% clones on yield basis were found to get selected at steps (a) through (d). For achieving early multiplication of the most productive clone for deployment, multiplication should be started with the best 36 (i.e. 60%) clones selected at age 2.

Six laticiferous system characters were investigated in 22 three-year-old, half-sib rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg.] progenies, evaluated at three sites (Votuporanga, Pindorama and Jaú, all in the São Paulo State, Brazil). The traits examined were: average rubber yield (Pp), average bark thickness (Bt), number of latex vessel rings (Lv), average distance between consecutive latex vessel rings (Dc), density of latex vessels per 5 mm per ring averaged over all rings (Dd) and the diameter of the latex vessels (Di). The joint analysis showed that site effect and progeny x sites interaction were significant for all traits, except Lv. Estimates of individual heritabilities across the three sites were high for Bt; moderate for Lv, Pp and Dc; low for Dd and very low for Di. Genetic correlations in the joint analysis showed high positive correlations between Pp and the other traits. Selecting the best five progenies would result in genetic gains of 24.91% for Pp while selecting best two plants within a progeny would result in a Pp genetic gain of 30.98%.
